COSMIC & ISBSG

COSMIC Industry Data Release 1 is now available, containing data from 352 projects with a software size measured using the COSMIC Functional Size Measurement method.  This data release includes a copy of the initial in-depth analysis report of the COSMIC data, "COSMIC Sized Software Projects Special Analysis", which provides revealing insights into the performance of Real-Time, Infrastructure and Business Application projects.

Background

Increased awareness of the COSMIC sizing method has resulted in more frequent requests for benchmark data.  A data collection initiative in the first half of 2009 resulted in a great leap forward by gathering a lot more COSMIC-based performance data.  This data was rated and processed by the ISBSG, and has been included in Release 11 of the ISBSG Estimating, Benchmarking & Research Suite.  Charles Symons then produced a detailed, 27 page, benchmark report "COSMIC Sized Software Projects Special Analysis" that was sent to each of the data submitters.   This report is now available to purchase, and is also available free to both Special Reports & Web Subscribers and licensees of the COSMIC Industry Data Release 1.

Submit COSMIC data and be rewarded

If you are a COSMIC user you can help the ISBSG to achieve an improvement in the quality, extent and value of COSMIC-based benchmarks by submitting project data. Simply download the free Concise Data Collection Questionnaire (CDCQ) and use it to submit your data, or if you have data in an electronic format (eg Excel spreadsheet), you can submit that and the ISBSG will map the data to its format.  Please note that there is no limit to the number of projects you can submit – the more data you submit, the more value your organization gains.

If you submit data to the ISBSG you will receive a free Project Benchmark Report for each project submitted and a free copy of the COSMIC analysis report. These will help you identify opportunities for performance improvement.

Organisations that submit 20+ COSMIC projects to the ISBSG repository will receive a free copy of the COSMIC Industry Data Release 1. 

Your organization has already profited from the free availability of the ‘open’ COSMIC method which was developed as a non-commercial effort for the general benefit of the software community.  By submitting project data to the ISBSG you will be contributing to this common good by helping to increase the value of the method, which should aid its increased adoption.

Important note: The COSMIC and ISBSG organizations guarantee that any project data you submit will be anonymized so that no-one will be able to link that data to your organization. There is no risk of you losing any competitive advantage you may have gained from using the COSMIC method.
