Speed of Delivery
Speed of delivery can be either...
the measure of the number of function points delivered in an elapsed month,
or
the measure ofthe number of function points delivered per person per month.
The Practical Project Estimation 2nd edition provides a table of regression equations that you can use to obtain an indicative estimate of speed of delivery (FP per elapsed month) for a project. Equations are provided for:
- Development platform
- Development language
- Development language/platform combination
The Toolkit also provides tables for mainframe and mid-range platforms that show speed of delivery by team size. These tables can be useful to establish the practicality, or otherwise, of adding more people to a development team, also in initially planning a practical team size to deliver a required number of function points per month. For example if you have a mainframe project of 900FP which needs to be completed in four months, you need to deliver 225FP per elapsed month. Reference to the appropriate chart indicates a team size of 15-20 people. You can then decide on the practicality of that team size for your project and adjust the project variables as needed.
