History

The International Software Benchmarking Standards Group is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in 1997. Its formation was built upon several years of previous cooperation by a group of national software metrics associations that were trying to develop and promote the use of measurement to improve software processes and products for the benefit of both business and government.

The members of the ISBSG are the IT and metrics associations of thirteen countires.

How the ISBSG Can Help You

The ISBSG provides products and services to allow software developers and maintenance staff to:

  • benchmark themselves against the world's best,
  • more accurately estimate effort, time and cost,
  • lower development risk,
  • reduce "time to market",
  • increase productivity, and
  • build an experience database of their organisation's productivity

All mature software development operations are interested in:
  • Increasing productivity
  • Reducing “time to market”
  • More accurate calculation of project time and cost
  • Lowering project development risk

The ISBSG has been established to help you with all of these.

The ISBSG can tell you what productivity other organisations attain that have similar profiles to your organisation. (e.g. organisation type, business area, development environment, etc.)

The ISBSG offers you a free data collection questionnaire to enable you to collect relevant metrics pertaining to your projects and applications.  You can use this to establish your own in-house repository if you wish.  You can also e-mail your project or application details to the ISBSG to enable you to be part of the international repositories and compare your IT development or Maintenance & Support to world’s best practice.

The ISBSG publishes an analysis of its development/enhancement database in: The Software Metrics Compendium to help you and your IT practitioners keep abreast of development trends.

The ISBSG releases a Data CD of the Repository data to allow you to do your own analysis of the world’s projects. All you have to do is to make a commitment to keep information of your IT project size and effort estimates, actual effort expended on each project, and to enter this information into the ISBSG development/enhancement repository for completed projects.  Within three weeks of receipt of your data, the ISBSG will send you a Project Benchmark Report that will show you how your project productivity compares with similar projects in the database.

The ISBSG supports research and the publication of resulting information to encourage software process improvement.
