Project Delivery Rate
Project Delivery Rate, (PDR), is a measure of the hours it takes to deliver a Function Point. A low PDR means that fewer hours were needed to deliver a function point. It is defined as Project Work Effort (measured in hours), over Functional Size of the delivered software (measured in function points). It is expressed as Hours/FP.
ISBSG publications report the PDRs for the projects in the Repository. These PDR figures can be used for project estimation or to benchmark your performance against similar projects in the Repository. There are a great variety of projects in the Repository. The PDR varies considerably from one group of projects to another, so it is important that you compare "apples with apples" when benchmarking or estimating using PDR.
PDRs In the ISBSG Repository:
The median PDR for development team effort is 11.3 hours per function point (it is important to remember that the projects in the ISBSG Repository probably represent the "best" 20% of the development industry).
The ISBSG publications list the PDRs by up to 46 characteristics including organisation type, business area, platform and programming language. These are helpful in allowing you to select a median PDR that closely matches the characteristics of your own projects.
The Practical Project Estimation Toolkit provides tables of regression equations that you can use to obtain an indicative estimate of project delivery rate for a project. Equations are provided for:
- Development platform
- Development language
- Development language/platform combination

- Project size and maximum team size
